SAN ANTONIO – Any Baby Can (ABC) hosted its annual Butterfly Memorial, providing a space for the community and grieving families to remember and celebrate the lives of children lost.
The event was held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at Aggie Park. The Butterfly Memorial allows families to come together, share their experiences, and honor the memories of their children.
“ABC and our Bereavement Services supports families in their darkest hour when they lose a child,” said Jenny Hixon, President and CEO of Any Baby Can. “Our Butterfly Memorial is a time for remembrance, connection, and healing.”
Just this year ABC has already assisted 242 families and now has expanded its team from a single part-time staff member to three full-time professionals, allowing them to provide crucial services such as funeral assistance, grief counseling, and ongoing support.
Among those who attended were the Garza family, who experienced the heartbreaking loss of two sons. Their first son, Miles, diagnosed with Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome at age two, passed away in 2021 at the age of four. Tragically, their second son, Aidan, also diagnosed with the same syndrome, succumbed to complications from a bone marrow transplant in 2024.
“When you are under that kind of duress and stress, you are not thinking clearly,” the boys’ father, Miles Garza, said. “To hear someone say, ‘I am sorry. What can I do for you?’ and to sound so genuine about it truly meant something. We felt a lot of love from Any Baby Can – a lot of compassion and empathy.”
The boys' mother, Amber Garza, wants the community to know there are available resources for families going through the same tragedy.
“We try to keep each other strong; we lean on each other,” she added.
